Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.
I live in Logan, Utah, basically in Saranoni’s backyard. Like, I could throw a football from my back porch to their store. Just kidding, even Tom Brady couldn’t throw a football from my house to Saranoni; it’s actually a few miles away. BUT I do live very close. Close enough that I could drive down […]

There isn’t a mama out there that doesn’t love her sleep, right? I mean if there is, I haven’t ever met them. My first daughter had serious reflux and gas that really interrupted her sleep for the first few months of her life. So, when my second came along and slept like an angel, I […]

I don’t think I have ever questioned myself as much as when trying to decide whether or not my babies need Tylenol. Of course, there are the times where it is obvious thanks to tiny tops of teeth poking through gums, or because they are very apparently sick, but so many other times I am […]

It takes me a while after having a baby to get back into taking care of me like I should. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t completely let myself go during my postpartum phase, I just definitely don’t get back to doing everything I usually do for months following. Honestly, I tend to let myself […]

There are two beautiful little girls in my house. We love our girls something fierce. We spend quite a lot of time talking about empowering them, and taking in all the positive resources we can to help us raise them in a way that empowers them to be everything they want to be, and everything […]

In the role of parenting children, I don’t think that there is anything more nerve-wracking than your babies being really sick. My first baby truly never got sick until after she had turned one. She had a few ear infections but that was it. We had our second in August and apparently, mother nature decided it was […]

Bottles. Such a strange thing to have so many options to choose from, right? If you haven’t done so already, go read Brooke’s bottle comparison post that gets real and honest about the different bottle brands and types we sell at The Baby Cubby. That breakdown alone may very well answer many bottle questions you […]

Generally speaking, you could say that all young kids need is to be fed, cleaned, and loved immensely. It seems simple enough, right? I guess in a perfect world, you would never have to feed or clean a grabby or protesting child, but alas the world isn’t perfect; especially when you are raising beautiful tiny humans. […]

Unless you’re breaking some rules that are very strategically and safely in place, it’s not probable that you’ll get pregnant for the first six weeks after having a baby. But what birth control options are available and recommended once you have been cleared by your doctor for sex? First, let’s back up. In my experience, […]

If any of you have been to the home of a mama with a little baby, I am almost positive you have seen at least one of the following: Approximately 15 bottles, rings, nipples sitting out on a weird drying rack thing on the counter An open cupboard that is positively bursting with bottles of […]

About four weeks into having two kids I felt like I had it all figured out! I knew the baby’s sleep and feeding schedule down to the minute, was getting way more sleep than I did with my first baby, and I was recovering way better too. We were packing up to go out on […]

Ever feel like you’re totally screwing up as a parent? Well, when it comes to installing your kid’s car seat, you’re probably right. Oops. Did you know that 3 out 4 car seats are installed incorrectly. That’s, like, a little bit troublesome. Actually a lot. Considering all the research we did, all the reviews we […]

We currently sell 13 different brands of diaper bags. Each brand different, unique, functional, and gorgeous. But how in the world is a decision supposed to be made between not only brands, but styles and colors as well? When it comes to baby gear and decision-making, I personally have the hardest time in the diaper […]

Hello, hello blog friends! I get to follow Jamie and Brooke in telling you a bit about myself, what my life is filled with, and a few of my absolute favorite baby things that I truly couldn’t do without! You’ve been reading my thoughts for quite a while now, but I guess I truly have […]

I have a confession, mamas. I love airports. I love flying! I love people watching. I love perusing the books in the random airport stores. I love the flat escalator thingys that make you feel like you’re running at light speed when you’re just walking. I love that everyone is going somewhere and coming from […]

When I was pregnant with my second child, one of the biggest questions I had for parents of multiple kids was how to help my first child adjust to having a sibling. We were given great advice from parents around us and felt that the process went a little better than we had expected. That […]

The day we turned my boy around to face forward was the day before his second birthday. We were down in Salt Lake City for the day (about two hours away from our house) and his first-ever ride facing forward was in his brand new birthday present, his fresh-out-of-the-box convertible car seat. Yes, he was […]

I don’t think there are many people that dread cold and flu season as much as the parents of young children. Is there anything as sad as a sick little one? Yes, it is miserable when mom and dad are sick and have to take care of the kids, but nothing breaks a heart quicker […]

It’s impossible to get through this mama journey without asking a few questions. Actually a ton of questions. Probably a couple million… and counting. What with the recommended water temperatures for baths, medicine doses set by weight, and how often your kid is supposed to poop in a 24-hour period, you can start to go […]

We live in a funny world full of all varieties of trends, slang words, fads, binge watching, styles, and so on and so forth; cool things that last an X amount of time and everyone is talking about it, watching it, or saying it. One cultural thing we’ve really caught onto as a society is […]

Happy New Year, mamas! We made it through the holiday season, and we made it more or less in one piece. Unfortunately, I cannot fit into any of my jeans, and I have a headache because I’ve been eating sugar cookies for breakfast every day, but other than that, we are GREAT! If you’re a […]

When I first found out I was going to be a mom to a GIRL, I was filled with complete joy! I had said I’d be fine with another boy, and I probably would have been, but I truly felt overwhelming happiness that I would get the opportunity to have a little girl of my […]

How do you know when it’s time to wean your baby? For most, the answer is when your baby is one, but like with almost everything else in parenting, there isn’t one correct answer here. There are so many reasons someone might wean a baby earlier than others and that is a-okay! With my first […]

And while we don’t consider ourselves experts in the parenting field, we do have experience and we enjoy sharing tips, ideas, and awesome products with the online world. Every once in awhile, you may find that our […]

Every parent hopes and wishes for the day that the baby sleeps well. Whether it just be on a predictable schedule or all the way through the night, I don’t think there is a better gift than a child that isn’t waking and crying at all hours of the night. And once a baby is […]

Mealtimes involving toddlers are exhausting. They take up so much time, yet it’s such a tornado of an experience that it seems to go from start to finish in a blink of an eye! The insulting remarks from your picky one about your cooking are sure to sting or cause you to never want to […]

When your little one is reaching the solid food stage, you may be scratching your head a little bit about how that’s going to work. Especially since most babes are pretty much attached to the breast/bottle and have zero interest in getting food from anywhere else. Picky eaters, am I right? But the fact is, […]

I’m not a perfect parent. There is a boatload to learn and remember and keep track of, especially with the first kid. It’s easy to be misinformed or undereducated due to the vast number of things to learn as a new parent. This pertains to so many different parenting situations, but where I found I lacked […]

There isn’t really a great way to describe the way your abdomen feels after you give birth. It’s one of those things that you hear people talk about, and then when you find yourself standing in the bathroom of your hospital room wondering who is looking back at you in the mirror you get it. […]

You’ve likely dealt with a newborn with baby acne, but do you remember the remedies you used to help it go away? And did you ever think about why it was there in the first place? Below are a few facts about baby acne, and suggestions on how to help your baby with his/her acne. […]

“Time to eat!” “Please come sit down!” “Use your spoon, not your hands!” “Stop throwing your plate on the floor!” “You can still eat it even though it’s touching the sauce!” “No, you cannot have cereal instead!” If you were wondering, these are all things I said about 3 hours ago when I was feeding […]

Winter has come in Utah which means Yay! Christmas!!…but boo to cold and flu season. At least one person in my family has been sick at any given time since Halloween. Something has got to give soon because we’re going a bit stir crazy over here! Do you feel like once you get a cold in […]

Reflux is ridiculously common. It seems like everyone knows someone who has dealt with a baby who had reflux to some degree or another. I’ve included reflux in many of my previous articles about motherhood because it took up so much of my life, but there hasn’t been a single article that I’ve written that […]

Why is it that the easiest and often first reactions when your child is acting out are “do you want to go to timeout?!!!” and how about the classic “if you don’t stop by the time I get to three, then you are going to be in big trouble?” I think that every single parent […]

Coming from a mama who just wrestled her 18mo into a onesie with approximately 6000 snaps, I can tell you this post is NECESSARY. If you’re little one is in the market for some cute threads, and YOU are in the market to put them in something that won’t take up precious time with all […]
