Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.
Coming from a mama who just wrestled her 18mo into a onesie with approximately 6000 snaps, I can tell you this post is NECESSARY. If you’re little one is in the market for some cute threads, and YOU are in the market to put them in something that won’t take up precious time with all […]

The three things I enjoy spending money on the most are 1. Decorations for my house. 2. Food. And 3. Irresistible things for my children. While it’s not advisory to consume Jellycat products, they most definitely fulfill the criteria for the other two categories! Especially the Christmas-themed collection! Christmas decorations are an absolute joy but […]

Our family is transitioning from traveling to our parents’ houses and spending Christmas with our families to staying home and working on our own traditions! But we’ve got ourselves a big problem: my husband grew up opening all presents on Christmas Eve before bed, and my family opened all our gifts on Christmas morning. So […]

Like so many other families, stockings are a big tradition part of Christmas in my family. Always the first thing torn into on Christmas morning, they were the sweet little taste of all of the awesome things to come throughout the rest of morning. This year I have another infant in my house and I […]

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I 100% recommend gliders for new moms! If I were keeping track of how many hours I’ve spent in my chair, I’d likely be baffled by the number. A price can’t be put on peaceful moments spent in the rocking chair bonding and loving on a […]

Ever have a nosy shopper at Walmart tell you that your little one should have a hat and socks on even though it’s like 75 degrees outside? Yeah, me too. That’s why I shop at Target. Just kidding. Not about the Target thing though. But really, why does everyone have such strong opinions about how […]

You know how sometimes you see a product and instantly fall in love? Well this was Tegu for me a few years ago when I first saw them! I thought they were genius, beautiful, and very well made. Little did I know at the time how amazing not only their products are, but also the […]

My oldest just turned four, and among other realizations with this fun age, I’ve come to find out that I’m probably getting very close to the point of needing to re-evaluate a few situations in our household. He’s becoming much more aware of his surroundings and asking more and more questions as the days go […]

Anyone else so over all the bells and whistles and always chasing the newest thing for our kids’ toys? When you see a blast from the past in the toy aisle do you say, “I used to love that as a kid!” Ever wish you could just show your babes the simple sweet toys we […]

This week I must have displeased the parenting gods because I am not exaggerating when I say my toddler has pushed. me. to. the. edge. every single day! He knew exactly how to push my mama buttons to make me fly off the handle. He was willing to let me count to three knowing full […]

When you have babes, there is a list a mile long of things that you plan on getting to make your life easier. In the market for a new monitor? Ask the grandparents. New jammies? The favorite auntie. But when it comes to basic care needs for our littles we’re usually the ones to deliver. […]

I recently wrote about bathtub safety for infants and bathtub safety for toddlers, but I didn’t feel quite complete with just the two of them because I know there are several parents out there who often shower with their babies and/or toddlers. So here I am, continuing on safety rants, but this time geared toward […]

Remember when Owlet came out with their Smart Sock a few years ago and completely rattled the parenting world?! A device that checks on your baby while you sleep? Bless you Owlet, bless you! Well, guess what folks…they have done it again. Keep reading because you are going to love everything about this Owlet Cam! […]

Night terrors might just sound as awful as they are. There’s nothing quite as scary as looking into your child’s eyes and seeing absolutely nothing there. No recognition of who you are, no sign of what’s scaring them, not even a clue that they’re screaming at all. You can see him and you can definitely […]

Aren’t holidays the absolute best? I especially love Thanksgiving because to me it feels like the first event of the best time of the year! Family gathers and the slew of traditions begins! Now that I have two kids of my own, and the responsibility to carry on traditions lies on my back, I especially appreciate […]

The topic of postpartum depression and anxiety has gotten quite a bit more attention recently than it ever has before. It is something that should be talked about and acknowledged because it is very real, and women need to know that bringing it up is not taboo or embarrassing! This is my story and experience […]

I made it out. My three-old-turns FOUR this week! I’m officially done with the “threenager” stage and I couldn’t be more proud of myself or happier about it. He’s my first, so I suppose I’m not forever done with this stage, but you can bet that I’m going to enjoy while it’s gone. I thought […]

Here’s the deal mamas, even when I knew absolutely nothing about baby gear, baby needs, or baby anything (AKA when I was pregnant with my first babe), I still knew that Aden + Anais was going to be a staple for us. They were the first brand that I knew about when I was first […]

I’ll be honest; I miss breastfeeding way more than I thought I would at this point. It’s only been five months since I weaned my little girl, but it feels like a lot longer than that. However, I don’t miss the start of breastfeeding AT ALL. It’s all a little too tricky for my liking and […]

There are only so many ways that you can reason with a strong-willed, high energy, stubborn toddler. And once you’ve hit your limit, you AND your little one get frustrated and upset. AKA lots of tears, yelling, and probably some hair pulling. So how on earth are you supposed to parent a child when he […]

Are you in the process of nursing your babe and feel that your milk supply is decreasing or that you’re not continuing to produce as much as you need to feed your hungry baby? Is it just game over once you start to feel things taper off? Or are there some other things that you […]

Basically anytime after you give birth to your first child can be considered life after birth, right? You slowly get used to being a parent and continually adjust to each new phase and change in your parenting career as your child grows. But, life RIGHT after birth…now that is where the whirlwind of parenting really […]

Because it is such an overbearing task, I’ve come up with a few tips to ensure you have the best help available, especially as the flu season will […]

So it’s Halloween. You maybe planned on doing something fun for your kids today but, as it tends to do quite often, time got away from you? Good news! This article consists of ideas you can do today without needing to go buy something and with little-to-no prep using items that are likely already in […]

Halloween is definitely a favorite holiday in our home! My son talks about trick-or-treating all year long, and insists on keeping out his jack-o-lantern bucket at all times in case there is an opportunity for someone to drop treats in there. Ever the optimist. I love every part of the Halloween season–pumpkin patches, carving pumpkins, […]

In the mama community, we are constantly asking our besties about the must-have products we all swear by. And the Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow  is an absolute fave among mamas! If you’re anything like me, you want to invest in products that you’ll get a lot of life out of, and the Luna Lullaby […]

One could say I’m quite strict when it comes to bath time. The reason for this is simple: I know three different children (from two families) who have passed away from drowning in their bathtub. Certainly that’s reason enough to have the passion that I do about bathtub safety. This article is a sequel to […]

Struggling to figure out how to include your little one in all of the Halloween fun this year? Chances are you’ve already come up with (and let go of) a million and one costume ideas for your teeny babes. Truly that is one of the most FUN ways to make sure your newborn is taking […]

Breastfeeding is tricky for many reasons. One of them being that you truly have no idea how much milk your baby is getting. When feeding with a bottle, there is a clearly marked indicator of exactly how many ounces of milk were in there to begin with and whether or not the bottle gets completely […]

You may have recently read my article all about bathtub safety for infants. If not, take a look. For now, I’m going to solely focus on the comparison of two very popular and competent infant bathtub options: the Puj Tub and the Boon Soak Bath. Differences: The four biggest differences between these two brilliantly designed […]

Carving pumpkins is fun and definitely deserves a spot up in the top ten best Halloween activities, but I can’t help but dread it every time it actually comes down to the reality of pumpkin carving. It’s messy, it’s cold (even if doing it indoors, the goo inside is cold), it takes a good chunk of […]

Any mama who has had a crying baby (so, yeah, every mama) has had that terrifying moment of feeling like there is NOTHING at all you can do to get them to feel better. Not hungry, not sleepy, not cold, not hot, not not not, but still crying!  Well if this type of thing is […]

Whether you’re nursing or bottle feeding your babe, you KNOW how it feels to be stuck in your seat for up to an hour getting your little what they need. Don’t even get me started on how much time I’ve spent in our trusty rocking chair doing nothing. Trust me. You want to have something […]

I debated for a really long time whether or not I should write about this topic. My hesitation stems from the fact that I’ve not personally experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, or death of an infant. I’m an outsider to the grief and heartbreak that accompanies these life-altering situations and the ripple effect it has from […]

Bathing an infant may possibly be on the list of top 20 trickiest things of all time. They’re itty bitty, incredibly slippery, and oh so fragile. But, alas, they still need to be washed! Infancy goes by in a blink of an eye, yet some aspects of it – including bathing – seem to take […]
