Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.
We know that some of our mamas are saying goodbye to summertime, and school is starting in just a couple of weeks. The rest of us have another couple of weeks to put off all of our frantic back-to-school shopping. But if your little’s first day is right around the corner, then let Skip Hop […]

Flying with children is a task like none other. It is tricky to figure out the logistics, and there is a heck of a lot to think about when considering flying to your destination with one or more children along for the ride. One of the things to factor in is how old your child […]

You’ve just given birth on the Labor and Delivery Floor. What’s next?  You can expect to stay in your delivery room for about an hour after delivering before being moved into your recovery room. This is to give the doctors and nurses plenty of time to get Baby’s stats completed, double and triple check how […]

It’s something I do way too often, and I do it without even thinking. I find myself stressing about it for hours and feeling the guilt over it afterwards. I am a SAHM/Working Mama and I say “I’m sorry” all the time. Had to miss a planned playdate because I didn’t get all the work […]

There are two types of Sick Days for Dad:  The first: He’s super sick and can’t get out of bed, so he’s locked in his room upstairs all day long. The second: He’s sick enough he shouldn’t go to work, but he’s okay enough that he’s up and about and totally messing up the routine […]

Children’s clothing can be tricky… On the one hand, I personally want to purchase clothing that I can preferably pass on down to each of my daughters. However, I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for clothing that my girls will likely outgrow in a very short time. For those reasons and […]

I cannot be alone when I say that back to school shopping is my favorite thing of all time. When I was younger, as young as elementary school, I would plan out my whole first week of school outfits. I’m not the only one, am I mamas? Back-to-school style is such a fun way to […]

Sweet, sweet summertime. It’s finally here! One of my favorite summer activities with my toddler is having a picnic lunch. It helps us get outdoors at least once during the day, and mixes up our regular lunchtime rituals. I recently purchased a Little Unicorn outdoor blanket for myself, and I’m here to say it’s one […]

Today was a day that I definitely want to forget. One of those days where the kids ignored everything I said, popsicles were dripped all over the house, tantrums were thrown, and I absolutely lost it. I yelled (and I mean I yelled) at my kids. I am usually a pretty easy-going mama, and I […]

There are some days when I shake my head and wonder why on earth I am so tired and can hardly keep my eyes open while I make lunch for my kids. Today is not one of those days. Today I know why I am so worn out. It’s because I was up late last […]

A couple of weeks ago, my little baby turned 2! Such a fun day spent celebrating her sweet personality and big smile. But there are a couple of things I wish hadn’t shown up around the same time as her second birthday– mainly the attitude, tantrums, and slapping/biting/screaming that are all too common now that […]

It is expected that you’re going to have a lot of questions as a parent. And one of the things that is constant throughout parenting is questions about what the […]

Summertime is peak season for amusement parks, and for our fam that means Disneyland! We’ve been a few times so far this summer, and every time I’ve been, I’ve found myself pulling something out to hand over to a frazzled mama who forgot to pack it– sunscreen, diaper, hair tie, tampon… I swear, sometimes I […]

I have a strong love for vintage styles on tiny people: pinafores, bonnets, knee-high socks. Speaking of socks, finding socks that fit a newborn, and that actually stay on, is no easy feat (no pun intended). Condor caught my eye when shopping for tiny baby socks because they offer a wide range of sizes. In […]

Am I the only mama who kind of stresses about my little guy losing all the progress he’s made during his year of school? I mean, my son’s only in preschool, but I’m still kind of nervous that by the time September rolls around, it’s going to be like he’s starting from square one… and […]

Living in Southern California means that our family doesn’t normally get hit with the travel bug the same way a lot of fams do. Since we have great weather and we’re so close to beaches, amusement parks, and have access to outdoor entertainment pretty much all year long, we have plenty of fun here at […]

Did you know that in the United States, the 4th of July is rated number 3 or 4 on most everybody’s favorite holiday list? Of course, this isn’t always the case–some people don’t care for the 4th of July all that much, while others LOVE it and rank it number 1. Wherever you’re at on […]

I have had conversations with tons of mamas about the unfortunate situation that we find ourselves in when we have too many babes and not enough space in our backseat to fit them all. If you’re in a similar stage of life, and are looking to try and jam a third car seat in your […]

As mamas, we’re all about trying to make it work with what we have, but there are other times when it becomes clear that an upgrade is definitely in order. This couldn’t be more true when it comes to our littles’ strollers. Once our second babe was born, I found out real quick that our […]

When it comes to things we buy all the time, and those staples that are on our weekly grocery list, we have a really good idea of when they go bad. But when it comes to bigger purchases that are made only once or twice, we sometimes don’t even think to LOOK for an expiration […]

I’ve been going through a minor, yet high-maintenance health issue that has required me to attend many appointments multiple […]

I am all about the summertime life– I love the pool, beach, park, all things outside. I love little kids running through sprinklers, the smell of sunscreen, sandy floors in my car, and all of the above. The only problem is that sometimes here in southern California, it can get just a little too hot […]

Do you ever get ultra frustrated looking inside something that you’ve bought to find the washing/drying/laundry instructions, and just giving up because you don’t understand the little symbols? Ugh. Wouldn’t it just be easier if you had a list of all your fave brands that you can go to to see how you’re supposed to […]

Depending on where you live and what resources you have available to you, YES. Most of the time, you will find that formal swimming lessons (a parent/baby class) won’t be an option until your baby is six months or older. However, chances are if you live in a location with abundant resources, you may be […]
