Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.

Every parent knows the importance of reading to their littles and having books around to encourage learning and development. Unfortunately, every parent also knows how it feels to see their baby chewing on a board book and hoping it doesn’t disintegrate in their mouth, or trying to tape together torn pages from the same book […]

When we write these prepping for baby posts, almost always we’re writing them for the superhero who is birthing the child– yeah, you mama. But that means that the other main player in this whole parenting thing kind of gets the shaft– yeah, the daddy. Today I thought that I would take a sec to […]

The last few weeks of my life have been absolutely exhausting, and I have reached my limit. I am stressed. I am tired. I am sore. I am sick. I am burnt out. I should have slowed down, but life happened and I didn’t see any other option than to keep going at the same […]

Just saying the word “teething” can make most parents shudder. It induces horrific flashbacks of late night screams and copious amounts of drool. Oh wait, Just me? When my first baby was teething, and I was nearing a breaking point, I picked up a tube of Wink Naturals Cool Gums Teething Gel in hopes that […]

So it was just a normal day meeting up with a friend at the park with our littles. My son ran over to ask if I could help him open up a pack of fruit snacks, and I casually glanced into his ear and just about FAINTED. When did his ears have time to accumulate […]

Every six months or so when we have our HUGE tent sales, we get so, so, so, so, so many questions about any online deals during the weekend sales event at our store. And every time, we regretfully say no, that it’s an in-store-only exclusive sale, and to maybe see if they can find a […]

Before returning to work, I was exclusively breastfeeding my baby. When the end of my maternity leave was approaching, I realized I needed to acquire the necessary equipment to allow my husband to feed the baby while I was away. Now, what I wasn’t aware of as a new mommy was a little (common) issue […]

I was hanging out with one of my best friends the other day at the park with our kids and her darling new baby boy. I was asking how she was doing and if he was sleeping well, and she told me that he’s great, aside from the fact that he is constantly spitting up, […]

My son has been to the dentist twice now and hasn’t had a single problem with the entire process. My daughter is scheduled for her first appointment next week and I’m terrified. I’m convinced she’s going to be one of those kids who is taken to the back room (away from all of the other […]

I have very vivid memories of when my first baby was teething…and they aren’t exactly pleasant. One evening in particular, I found myself rushing back to The Baby Cubby in desperation. We had a bit of a scare this week mamas. We got in a car accident. Baby girl and I dropped off brother at school, and were hit by a car that failed to yield. It’s the first time I’ve been in an accident that left my car “undriveable” and having one of the babes […]

One of the most stressful things for new mamas is wondering if their baby is doing alright. It can cause a ton of postpartum anxiety, and can make it hard for mamas and daddies to sleep… and parents NEED sleep. We need it. So instead of worrying about whether or not your babes are breathing, […]

It’s likely that people are most familiar with the Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat from Diono because of the ability to fit THREE of them across one row of seats (in most vehicles)! They have a slimmer look and fit, so three on one row is easily achieved. AMAZING. However, just because they are most […]

School is starting, and that means our littles are throwing on their backpacks, putting on their new school shoes, and getting back in the classroom. This weekend our family had a bit of a learning experience that scared this mama enough to write a post so that other mamas don’t have to deal with the same thing. We were walking to a park close to our house, but where we needed to cross a couple of busy streets to get […]
