Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.

Ahh teething. One of the necessary evils of growing up. But when does this whole teething process start? That is today’s million […]

Since it’s officially spring time and I’m all about the spring cleaning, I’ve decided it’s time to confess something to all my mama friends: I have a problem getting rid of my kids’ clothes. I never want to say goodbye to the sweet little dresses my little babe wore when she was tiny and new, […]

Attention parents! Disney just announced something major. And if you’re planning a trip to Disneyland or Disney World anytime soon, you’re definitely going to need to know this information. Effective on May 1, 2019, there is an official banning on “oversized” strollers. As in, you will be turned away and not permitted to enter the […]

The other day one of my besties was doing just about the sweetest thing of all time– she took my little guy for a day of playing with her son at the museum and play place so I could get some shopping done. I know. What an angel. When I was getting my son’s car […]

There are two little ladies in my house that are extremely interested in books. One of them actually likes to read them, the other one really just wants to completely tear them to shreds or soak them through with her slobber. The worst part? She is completely disinterested in the “baby proof” books, she wants […]

If you’re totally feeling the sunshine and living for spring season, then you’re probably looking to get your hands on some adorable clothes for your babes. At least that’s what I’m doing! With Easter right around the corner, and Mother’s day coming in hot in a couple of months, it’s time to find the perfect […]

Finding a car seat you love can be a difficult task. There are so many factors to consider and there are many car seats to choose from. For these reasons, car seat shopping can become overwhelming very quickly. In an effort to ease some of the overwhelm, this article will focus on the car seat […]

Most mamas these days are pretty accepting of other mamas who experience postpartum depression, and it’s become easier to talk about among our friends and fam, and most of us have tons of supporters to help us through. If you’ve ever been on instagram (heh), then I’m sure you’ve seen the stories with celebrities and […]

Once you have kids, there are a few things that become a LOT harder. And one of those things that you might not think about is making friends with other mamas. Having littles means that you’ll want to change your friend groups a little to extend to friends with kids, but that can be easier […]

Have you heard all the buzz about double cleansing? Below you'll find a basic how-to and defense for double cleansing (with Some Call Me Crunchy product suggestions, of course)!

Why double cleanse?

Double Cleansing is a must because having a clean canvas to apply toners and skin nourishing serums is very important. If you spend lots of money on serums and hydrating creams, but your skin isn't clean, those powerhouse products won't actually do very much...

We all know that life is legitimately crazy and that, thanks to the world we live in, it will likely forever be that way. So how, in the midst of all of the craziness, are we supposed to find and keep balance throughout life’s many hills and valleys? My husband was at a large Q&A […]

As if we needed another reason to spend money on our babies on all the goodies we love, the Baby Cubby is throwing a tent sale this weekend and it’s going to blow your mind! Great prices and amazing products = a WIN WIN! So here’s all the deets, mamas: The sale is this weekend […]

We all will have to deal with that panicking moment when our little one isn’t feeling well and there is NOTHING WE CAN DO TO HELP THEM! Whether they’re stuffed up and can’t sleep, or they have major tummy bubbles and they can’t sleep, or they have a fever and they can’t sleep… Yeah, okay, […]

As soon as people started finding out I was expecting my first, the advice started spit-firing my way at a speed and intensity I never could have imagined. Everyone has an opinion about just about everything, and for the most part, these opinionated people don’t keep their advice to themselves. Very rarely were people’s opinions […]

Our little fam lives in California, which means that we’re pretty used to being outside and being able to get out all of our energy whenever we want without needing to worry about the weather. But the last couple of weeks, we’ve been getting tons of (much needed, but kind of annoying) rain and it’s […]

With little kids, little holidays are so much fun! I always get excited about making the most out of tiny reasons to celebrate, and St. Patrick’s Day is that sweet little holiday that ushers in springtime with rainbows, and luck, and fun! So what are some easy ways to make St. Patrick’s Day fun for […]

If you’re a mama who makes dinner (is there another kind?), then you know all about how absolutely exhausting it can be to get your littles to actually eat the meal you’ve planned for them. And if you’re anything like me, then you’re probably getting pretty annoyed at the amount of time you put into […]

A while back I wrote a big old post comparing two of The Baby Cubby’s most popular cotton muslin swaddle blankets: Aden + Anais vs. Little Unicorn. Not only are these incredibly popular, but they also happen to be some of my favorite brands that are used A LOT in my home when I have […]

If your kids are anything like mine and they DEMAND to have a million books read to them every night right before bed, then you know the struggle of reading the exact same thing over and over that has something to do with a truck, or a frog, or a bunny. It not only gets […]

I don’t always shop only because there is a holiday or event coming up, but that is certainly the perfect excuse to shop! St. Patty’s day might not be one of the most exciting holidays, but you can really have some fun with a day full of green and chasing rainbows. Just in case green […]

Buying a baby gift for someone else is one of my favorite things to do! Okay, shopping for baby things period is one of my favorite things to do, BUT it is so fun to get to give such adorable things to someone. Through trial and error, I have developed a bit of a guideline for […]

When our baby girl Sienna was about 3 months old, we had her blessed at our church, and like a lot of families, it was such a sweet, memorable experience for our whole family. We had extended family and friends there, and we really made a point to celebrate the sweet new spirit that came […]

Not too long after my first baby was born, my husband and I were talking about our baby products and which one we thought we used the most. Besides the obvious answer of diapers and wipes, it didn’t take us long to decide: the portable changing pad. It was a definite favorite from the very […]

My sweet baby turned six months old five days ago. Why does it go so quickly?! Everyone says time moves more quickly with every kid, and I completely agree. It truly feels like just yesterday that we welcomed our second beautiful girl but I guess it wasn’t. Since I have been reminiscing a lot this […]

I just got back from a weekend away with my whole family– not my little family of 4. No, my big family of 7 people, plus their kids, spouses and girlfriends. In one house. For a full weekend. Needless to say, I need a nap. Or a short coma. I’m not picky. But it’s left […]

August 10th of this last year brought our second baby girl to us. My postpartum experience this time was so much better than with our first! Baby slept better, so I slept better, and mixed with the medication I was taking for my PPD/PPA, I just bounced back with an insane and very noticeable difference than […]

I’m not often the fun parent; that is strictly Dad’s role. But occasionally, when I’m feeling extra adventurous or am in an especially good mood, the “fun mom” side of me comes out. The typical activities I tend to visit during these rare times are some sort of arts and crafts: playdoh, slime, puddy, finger […]

Okay, friends, I am going to admit something to you right now. For a long time, I thought that everyone was buying the Nuna Pipa because it was just the trendy car seat; it’s minimal, sleek, and doesn’t have multi-colored designs on it. Then I got pregnant with my second baby and started looking for a […]

I am definitely not the person to talk to when it comes to sleep training. In fact, you likely won’t ever read another post from me ever about this topic…Why? Because I suck at it. I’m a complete baby when it comes to sleep training my babies/kids. Many moms would be absolutely appalled at some […]

I stay at home with two little kids. When we hit that 2 p.m. slump, mama is ready for everyone to be napping! Even if I just need a couple of quiet hours to call and make appointments, wash the dishes, shower, or just sit in silence. Unfortunately, now that my oldest is 4, he […]

I’m the mama of two beautiful kids: my son Hudson, 4, and our baby girl Sienna, 18 months. I am also the mama who has a two bedroom town home. So if you’re a pro at simple math like me, then you’ll have guessed that leaves 1 bedroom for both my babes. I wrote a […]

When you think about all of the hundreds of baby brands out there, one would imagine it to be a little tricky to narrow it down to his/her single favorite brand. Right? I say wrong. Because for me personally, this decision is actually quite simple: my vote is for Skip Hop. I’m continually impressed by […]

Life is noisy. But I don’t think we realize how noisy everything truly is until there’s a baby in the mix – a baby trying to sleep among the chaos of the world/house! This is why a lot of parents use a white noise or sound machine for their babies and children. And when it […]

There comes a point in pregnancy when mama will do just about anything that could bring baby to the outside world. Man, do the last weeks get unbelievably long! For some women, little tricks and procedures seem to work, and for others, the waiting and guessing game is just how it goes. Having your membranes stripped […]

Why is it that moms are expected to set the tone of the house and lead by example, and so much pressure is placed on mothers to be happy all the time because “when Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”? Don’t people realize how many hormones we’re dealing with? And the lack of sleep that […]

Although there suddenly seems to be giant snowstorms wreaking havoc on most of the country (we got sooo much snow last week!), spring is around the corner! I absolutely LOVE spring. It is, without a doubt, my favorite season. The only thing I don’t like about it is the giant guessing game of how to dress. […]

Happy Valentine’s Day mamas! Such a sweet holiday that can be filled with fun and treats and sweets. One of my favorite times of the year, and mainly because my anniversary is in the same week as V-Day, so it’s a lot of love celebrations! But if you’re like me and your love language is […]

Okay, let’s get something out of the way here, I actually don’t have any boys. BUT, I do have really close family and friends that have boys and I cannot tell you how many times they have told me how frustrating it is trying to find cute clothes for them. Apparently, there aren’t many companies out […]

I threw a baby shower for a friend this past week, and without a doubt, the most talked about thing for soon-to-be new mamas is the post delivery recovery. And without a doubt, every mama is dreading the first week when you’re sore, and tired. On top of the whole new baby thing, you’re also […]
