Hygiene plays a crucial component of a baby's overall care. Practicing a good hygiene is extremely important to keep your baby happy and healthy all the time.

Eight essential hygiene rules for your baby. Here are eight simple good hygiene practices to adopt when you have a baby.

  • Washing your hands with a good antibacterial soap is essential for removing harmful bacteria and germs that cause colds, flu, diarrhea and other infections. Be sure to dry your hands properly and wash your hand towels regularly. It's especially important to wash your hands before feeding your baby, after handling raw food, after changing a nappy or going to the toilet yourself, after touching pets, after touching anything dirty such as dirty nappies, rubbish or food waste.
  • You don't need to clean the house every day from top to bottom with disinfectant, you just need to pay particular attention to the surfaces that are most likely to harbour germs and bacteria. Focus on the areas that have a lot of contact with food, bodies and hands, such as bathrooms, kitchen benches, tables, crockery, cutlery and glassware. You need to be cleaning these properly. Use hot water with detergent for crockery, cutlery and glasses, while kitchens and bathrooms will need a thorough clean with a good disinfectant. Pay particular attention to taps, toilet seats, benches and door handles. Dry surfaces as well if they are not in a well-ventilated area with natural light.
  • Babies love to put things into their mouths, and toys are often the closest thing to hand. Be sure to regularly give your child's toys a clean with a good disinfectant. Wipe hard plastic toys down and make sure you rinse them thoroughly or put plush toys through the washing machine.
  • A good bath is essential for keeping your baby clean and tidy, but you need to make sure you are not over-washing as this is damaging to your baby's sensitive skin. In the first year of your baby's life a full bath is necessary only two or three times a week. Check out our step-by-step guide to bathing your baby.
  • These are three areas that need some special attention. Always keep your baby's nails well-trimmed so that they can't scratch themselves — the best time to trim them is when your baby is asleep. Be sure to use baby-sized nail clippers and not to cut the nails too short as these will hurt your baby.
  • Only wash the outside of your baby's ears, never the inside, and never insert cotton wool buds into your baby's ears. If your baby is unhappy and touching their ears repeatedly, this could be a sign of infection — be sure to get this looked at by a medical professional.
  • Clean any dried mucous from your baby's nose, as this can cause difficulty breathing. Use a damp wash cloth to gently remove the dried mucous. A nasal syringe may be needed to help remove excess mucous, but consult your baby's health practitioner before using one of these.
  • Be sure to keep your baby's eyes clear of any dried mucous. Use damp cotton wool to gently clean their eyes and seek medical attention if you notice your baby's eyes are irritated.

About a week ago, I went into my OBGYN for my yearly check up, and I was reminded about a whole bunch of things that I needed to bring up to him about my depression medication, ask some questions about irregular periods, and find out a safe solution for my blood sugar to make sure […]

While the birth of a baby is nothing short of a blessing, navigating through life after birth can be terrifying, especially during those first few weeks. You may find that your favorite outfit has been temporarily replaced with a stylish, multi-functional nursing vover and you’re more likely to wear nipple shields than jewelry.  Postpartum changes […]

Yesterday, we went to the park with a bunch of my mama friends for our weekly meet up, and my son insisted on riding his big wheel bike there. Once we got there and he was playing with all his buddies, it became clear that a lot of the kids wanted to get some ride […]

It happened again, mamas. I used my body wash in the kids’ bath this weekend and my little girl woke up with a super owie rash. WHY do I think I can get away with using any old body wash in the house for my littles?! If your little babe is anything like mine and […]

It’s no secret everybody is in love with Rags, the button-less rompers from Rags to Raches. But WHY? Shark Tank First off, it’s so fun when people from the state you grew up in or currently live in end up on television shows. There is an instant connection and you automatically begin rooting for that […]

My oldest daughter is three and a half. She has been potty trained for over a year, but she is still having random accidents. Somedays I am patient about it and other days I am so appalled that we are still having them. Potty training, in my mind, was a destination that you never stepped […]

It’s that time of year again, mamas. When we get to celebrate ourselves for a day by hopefully getting our dinner made by someone else, a foot rub from the hubby, and an adorable card made from our toddlers. It makes us shine with love and we get to spend some time enjoying all the […]

Memorial Day typically means a handful of things. First and foremost, it is a day for remembering and honoring those who have served and fallen fighting for our freedom, how blessed are we to live where we live! And how amazing that we get to rub shoulders with real-life heroes. Besides the obvious and actual […]

It’s time for me to face the facts– my little babe is a blanket lover. It took me a few months to realize that she carries it everywhere, insists on taking it with her in the car, has a hard time parting with it when we head into the store, and asks for it whenever […]

If you’re heading into summer looking to shed some layers and make things a little lighter, you’re going to love, love, love the new Fawn Design Mini! The Mini 2.0 has all the quality and space that you’ll want when you’re with your littles, but none of the bulk and weight! Right now, the Baby […]

When I was growing up, there was one phrase that my mom told me (and my siblings) ALL the time and it drove me absolutely CRAZY. I hated it enough that I swore that my own children would never ever hear me say it. “Not today.” Perhaps this sounds harmless and I was overreacting, or […]

Happy Star Wars Day! What’s not to love about extra days here and there to celebrate and proclaim our love for objects, food, movies, fandom, history, and SO much more? Today is an especially fun day at our house because Star Wars is a major favorite around here. I’m sure if I took the time […]

One of the funnest things is showering new mamas with gifts that will make their first delivery and first couple of months with their new babe even more sweet. If you’ve got a mama in your life that is going to be enjoying a newborn this summer, then let The Baby Cubby help you celebrate […]

Any mamas out there with little girls who constantly (and I do mean like always) have their hair in their face? I swear my babe has totally perfected the hair flip because she’s always pushing her hair out of her eyes so she can see where she’s going. And don’t even get me started about […]

One of the scariest moments for any parent is when your little one starts crawling and walking around, and then they get near a set of stairs. Whether they’re looking to go up or down, it basically makes your heart stop when you even see your little one by the steps. So how to do […]

Something I say all the time when it comes to my kids is, “It’s not a problem until it’s a problem.” Well when it comes to my littles taking sippy cups to bed at night… MAMA, WE HAVE A PROBLEM! My little girl went straight from nursing to using a sippy cup (she was a […]

And we have the perfect idea of how we want to spend it– A BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY! Since interacting with all our mamas through our Cubby Community brings us so much joy, […]

There’s something very personable about reading the “about” page on websites. It’s a good reminder that big, successful companies weren’t always that way and that there are real, live, actual faces behind some of the products that we love. Milkbarn is a brand I’ve recently come to love even more because of this. I’ve always […]

When it comes to our littles, we want to make sure we’re outfitting them in the best there is. If that means we can find them something that will be comfortable, safe, cute, and do some good to the planet that is a major win right there! Burt’s Bees is a brand that everyone knows […]

The Earth sure takes a beating for us, doesn’t it?! I am going to be completely honest here. Up until about two years ago, I wasn’t very earth conscious. Not that I didn’t appreciate this planet we call home, or that I spent my life trashing it. I just didn’t spend much time trying to […]

A few days ago, I was woken up in the dead of night hearing my little guy crying out for mama because his legs were hurting. My mama brain did a furious calculation of all the things that could be happening to him while I stumbled to his room to find out he was perfectly […]

We’ve all been there: putting the milk in the pantry, forgetting about preschool pickup, or realizing that the reason for a grumpy kiddo well into the day is because he wasn’t fed any breakfast. You know, the facepalm-worthy moments that we mostly blame on “mom brain”. While many moms will say (myself included) that their […]

Being mindful of the way that we’re treating our planet can be hard sometimes, and as mamas we have even more of a responsibility to teach our kids how to be kinder to the world that they’re living in. Earth Day is that sweet little holiday right in the middle of springtime when the world […]

If you have little girls in the house, it is likely that you also have a slight obsession with bows! And if you have boys, maybe you have a bow tie obsession! There are two pretty little heads in my house, and even though I have been looking at and purchasing bows for almost 4 […]

There is nothing cuter than seeing little kids rocking their stuff at the beach. The only thing that even comes close is watching them rock their stuff at the beach with their Salt Water Sandals on. So stinking cute! There is something about finding absolutely adorable shoes like the classic Salt Water Sandals and not […]

It’s pretty apparent that many parents have a definite least favorite age. But what about the favorite age? If you could, when would you grab the pause button and freeze time for a bit to enjoy everything a certain age has to offer? I was recently told by a friend that three is her favorite […]

Do you ever get to that point where you just say, “No more! No! More!” Well, then we are totally on the same page because I am so ready to clean up and scale back. I’ve written before that we live in a pretty small town home, and with two toddlers and a whole lot […]

It's that time of year again. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the mosquitos are attacking. Between water play, gardening, and eating meals on our back porch, my family spends a lot of time outside during the warmer months. When we first moved into our current home, I remember going outside to pick pears from our pear tree and literally running back inside ...
